A range selector can't
let two letters overlap.
After Effects animates text with a text animator and a range selector: add the animator, add the selector, set it to per-character, then hand-key an offset or fight an expression into staggering it for you. Want one letter still landing while the next one starts? A range selector clamps at its own edges — it cannot let two letters share a frame, no matter how you set the numbers.
The two numbers that actually matter — how long one letter's animation takes, and the gap before the next one starts — are buried behind sliders called things like "offset" and "randomize order," not duration and stagger. And if what you want is a reveal that travels into a mask, you're precomping the text, drawing the mask on a duplicate, and hoping the timing still lines up after your fourth revision.
Everything the range
selector should have been.
- Mask Reveal, No Precomp
- Draw a mask around the text and the letters travel into it from any side, padding and feather included, cascade intact. Nothing gets nested or duplicated — it's still one layer you can keep editing. One mask covers the whole block; ask for one per line and the panel tells you honestly that means a layer per line.
- Springs That Actually Overlap
- Elastic and elastic+ are real springs — they overshoot and let letters overlap mid-cascade, which a range selector can't do at any setting. Back adds a single overshoot of its own; four more easings round it out, from linear to a proper ease in-out.
- Cascade By Letter, Word, Line Or Block
- Pick the unit and everything else follows it. Run the cascade forwards, backwards, from the centre out, or randomised — four orders, one setting.
- Ten Ways To Move, Any Combination
- Slide, scale, rotate, fade, blur, tracking, skew, colour, a 3D flip, or a character scramble that lands each letter on its real glyph after cycling through junk. Stack as many as the moment calls for, in or out.
- 42 Presets, Or Save Your Own
- Shortlisted from 58 candidates, sorted into nine groups: springs that slide, resize or turn, snappy ones with no wait, kinetic combinations, the same moves run per word instead of per letter, and reveals through a mask. Star what you keep reaching for and it survives reinstalls.
- Edit The Words In The Panel
- Click the preview and type. Font, size, colour and alignment stay exactly as they were. Apply with nothing selected and AnyType builds a centred text layer for you, sized to the comp, and animates it — one undo removes both.
The live preview inside the panel runs the exact After Effects maths, not an approximation — what you see is what lands. Everything it writes is a real text animator on a real layer, so deleting the panel doesn't undo the animation, and one button removes everything AnyType added and nothing else. Pipelines that won't touch expressions — Lottie exporters included — get a flatter no-expressions mode that still travels.

Kinetic Type Intros
Letters cycle through junk characters and land on colour, one after another, before the title even finishes revealing. Scramble and colour, stacked, cascading by letter — the kind of intro that used to mean an expression rig.
Lower Thirds & Titles
A name cascades in word by word with a real elastic overshoot, letters overlapping mid-swing instead of politely waiting their turn. Save the combination once, drop it on every guest.
